As a homebrewer for over twenty years, it was natural to want a place to serve the beer and enjoy it with friends and family. Farrell's Pub was born in 2010 in a low-ceiling basement space that was dark and cozy. In 2020 we opened in a larger basement space with higher ceilings, so we went for a brighter look. The bar and backsplash are treated copper and the bar skirting is reclaimed barn wood. The eight taps are supported by a single stainless 36-inch drip tray with glass rinser. The lighting is made from black pipe, contributing to a steampunk industrial look. Perpendicular to the bar is a brick-faced wall with a row of cabinets topped with black granite. A perfect spot for serving food. The brick facing is a product I got from Home Depot. The sign was made by my son-in-law and the digital taplist displayed on the monitor is an open source program called Raspberry Pints running on a pi that also streams music to the pub space. Across from the bar are a set of barn doors leading to a small bedroom.
Much of the time Farrell's is a sports pub because the proprietors are big sports fans, especially of football. There's no shortage of screens. There's a 120-inch projector screen with surround sound, a 40-inch TV on a 180° swivel mount to serve both the theater and the pub, and a little 21-inch TV for emergencies like a third important college game. Tablets and phones have added additional screens in times of absolute insanity. The barn doors opposite the bar enclose a spare bedroom; if a guest needs to sleep one off, that's the place. All of the lighting in the pub and theater are smart lights, and Alexa will set the appropriate lighting scene for home theater viewing or pub party upon request.
